Floaters and Flashes
Floaters are small specks or strands that appear to float across your vision, looking like tiny dots, lines, or cobwebs. Flashes are like lightning or fireworks flashes of light that appear in your vision. As you age seeing these on occasion are normal. But with RP they are more prevalent especially as the disease advances. They are caused by the Vitreous Body gel pulling away from the Retina.Cataracts
Cataracts are the clouding over of the Lens in your eye. This is a common side effect of RP. It is treated by surgery. The affected Lens is removed and replaced with an artificial Lens. For some, after the surgery more clouding can occur at the back of the Lens capsule. This is also easily treated with a laser called a YAG.Photophobia
Photophobia is a condition of severe light sensitivity. Bright lights or even the Sun can cause a discomforting or painful reaction. This condition can also lead to problems with contrast or reading black print on a white background. Sun glasses can help. Seeking out a low vision specialist should be considered.Charles Bonnet Syndrome
CBS also known as phantom vision can occur as RP advances. People with CBS can have visual hallucinations. This is caused by the brain trying to make up for what the eye is no longer able to process. It frequently occurs during stressful situations.Other Conditions
Some people with RP can have dry eyes. Some have balance issues. RP can affect other areas of your health though this is not a common occurrence.
Once again, you should always bring up any changes or concerns with your Ophthamologist. Maintaining your health and especially your eye health is very important in coping with RP.
